16GB vs 32GB vs 64GB RAM: which is worth it?

21 September 2026

A very common mistake when choosing the initial configuration of a PC or upgrading it is to think that more RAM necessarily means better performance.

Although basic logic might point in that direction, it is not as simple as choosing a higher-capacity memory, since FPS and performance do not depend solely on this component.

Is it worth paying more for 32 GB or even 64 GB of RAM, or is 16 GB enough? It all depends on how the PC is used and on the rest of the components.

In this article we review the most common uses so that you can work out what type of user you are and how much RAM is ideal in terms of quality and price to cover your needs.

How much RAM does a PC need in 2026?

In general, over time operating systems, applications, browsers, video games and professional software tend to consume more memory.

Simply running the basic elements of a PC and background applications can take up several GB, without the need for particularly heavy games or programs to be open.

To get an idea of what the current RAM requirements are, modern games can consume between 12 GB and 20 GB of RAM, browsers such as Chrome with several tabs open usually require several GB, and editing and design programs can easily exceed 16 GB.

In this way, the high-end memory of a few years ago has now become the standard.

16GB of RAM: who it is enough for

Is 16 GB of RAM enough? Yes, in some cases it is still enough.

If you use your PC for gaming, with 16 GB you can run practically all current games with good performance, as long as you do not have too many applications open at the same time.

For home use, with tasks such as browsing, streaming or using basic applications and office tools, there is no problem with 16 GB.

It is therefore a sufficient configuration for students and people who make basic home use of their PC.

However, 16 GB of RAM can show some limitations, especially in multitasking. In addition, when running very demanding games, the lack of memory can cause microstuttering.

Looking to the future, 16 GB of RAM is likely to become insufficient for games or advanced programs sooner than a higher-capacity memory.

32GB of RAM: the new standard for advanced gaming

Those looking for a gaming PC with good performance have a better option in 32 GB of RAM. The most demanding games, with open worlds, or simulators, run more smoothly with 32 GB. In addition, this capacity allows you to play while running background apps or even while streaming.

As well as for video game enthusiasts, 32 GB of RAM is suitable for those who use professional video, photo or design editing software.

Looking to the future, it is a good option because it offers a lot of stability and smoothness, and it is expected to remain a good option in the coming years.

64GB of RAM: is it really necessary?

Taking the above into account, 64 GB would be a high-end range, ideal for those who work with high-resolution video, 3D modelling, virtual machines, large databases, simulation…

However, it does not usually make a difference in general use or current gaming, neither in smoothness nor in FPS.

RAM memory with different capacities

What RAM capacity you need according to your type of user

Not everyone needs the same amount of memory. The most suitable choice depends directly on how you use your PC on a day-to-day basis.

Everyday user (home, studies, basic office)

If you make everyday use of your PC, including tasks such as:

  • Web browsing (using social media, web searches…).

  • Office work. Word processing, spreadsheet, presentation programs…

  • Streaming platforms. To watch films, series, listen to music or podcasts…

  • Video calls.

  • Multitasking with these services.

16 GB is a very good option, since 8 GB can prove insufficient when multitasking. You can choose 32 GB if you want performance to remain optimal in the future.

Gamer user

If, in addition to the above, you want to play demanding modern titles and multitask with them, with occasional streaming, 16 GB would be the minimum necessary. With 32 GB you would have greater stability and better performance in games. 64 GB would not provide considerable improvements.

Professional user / content creator

In a demanding professional context, in which you work with video editing, graphic design, 3D modelling, programming, virtual machines or databases, 32 GB would be the standard for good performance. Depending on the tasks, 64 GB could be an investment with real advantages, especially in the long term and for heavy workloads. 16 GB of RAM should be ruled out, as it could notably limit productivity.

Advanced workstation user / technical environments

Lastly, those who carry out complex rendering, simulation, multiple virtualisation, AI and data analysis work do need high-end RAM in order to work with good performance.

When is it worth investing in more RAM?

Use this checklist to find out whether you need to expand your RAM:

  • Is your RAM frequently between 90% and 100% usage?

  • Do you experience microstuttering or stutters when gaming?

  • Do you do intensive multitasking and does it not run smoothly?

  • Does your work involve heavy files and does your PC not perform?

  • Do you want to prepare your PC to work perfectly for several years?

If the answer to several of these questions is yes, expanding your RAM is probably worth it.

Recommendations according to budget

If you have a tight budget, 16 GB of RAM in a dual channel configuration (2 modules of 8 GB) for better performance should be enough.

The best option taking into account performance, price and durability is 32 GB of RAM.

Lastly, for professionals with demanding requirements, the ideal would be 64 GB.
